The Giardino degli Incontri (Meeting garden) project is part of the social and civil commitment that Architect Michelucci has always shown during his career. In 1985 a group of detainees from the ninth Sollicciano prison section, coming from the political detention area, propose to Michelucci to coordinate the planning team in order to develop a project for a meeting place for detainees and their families. The architect enthusiastically accept the challenge of a design intervention inside the prison walls but at the same time open to the city. Together with Michelucci, some detainees in semi-freedom status, young architects in civilian service and collaborators of the architect worked on the general project at the Foundation’s headquarters. At the end of 1990 the preliminary project was handed over to the Prison Management. After Michelucci’s death, the College of Engineers, of which the Architect was an honorary member, developed the executive project free of charge together with the Foundation.
