Inspections of motorway viaducts

Starting from the end of 2019 Hyper STP collaborates with the Company Proger s.p.a. in ATI with Bureau Veritas Nexta, Tecno Piemonte and Tecno Lab of Brescia to the surveillance activities of 4,347 works of art on the motorway network.

Hyper deals with the surveillance of motorway bridges and viaducts in the Tuscan section (IV section) of the A1 motorway, the A11 motorway (248 works) and the SAT, Società Autostrada Tirrenica, (50 works). The activity involves the analysis of the technical documentation, the inspection of the works and the processing, through a software specially programmed for this work, of detailed reports for each work.

The inspections are carried out either on foot either from the motorway platform or from the underlying countryside level or through the aid of by-bridges or mobile platforms to closely inspect the structure below the roadway, with the possibility of carrying out tests directly in the field, or , through the intervention of Tecno Lab, to pursue more in-depth investigations, such as non-destructive tests and sampling on site to be subsequently analyzed in the laboratory.

Monitoring of bridges and viaducts is essential for monitoring the ‘health’ of motorway works and for planning maintenance interventions, in order to ensure the safety of everyone.

Hyper professionals involved in the contract have been trained to carry out maneuvers on the motorway, to use lifting platforms and pantographs, to use third-class PPE and to access confined spaces, qualifications required for being able to operate safely, actively collaborating in safeguarding road infrastructures. The great responsibility to which our inspectors are called requires particular attention to all their actions.

For engineers who have always dealt with seismic and structural safety in general, the assignment to inspect viaducts and bridges of our highways represents a source of pride and professional satisfaction that is difficult to reach, if not with a work team such as Hyper’s.
